3 weeks in beautiful south Sri Lanka for people aged over 50

New for winter 2019/20, Alan and Cathy of Schoolhouse Ballater are offering a happy, healthy holiday programme for over 50s (10 max) with a simple daily routine of yoga based exercise, walks, talks, wonderful food, local visits, evening get-get-togethers and opportunities to make new connections and learn new skills in this beautiful, relaxing tropical island setting. 

  • Privacy, independence and free time as well as company and expert guiding by local professionals and by your hosts, Alan & Cathy Low of Schoolhouse
  • Accommodation (full-board) in the Schoolhouse bungalow on the south coast 
  • Local excursions to some of the main sights and not so seen sights, tapping into local culture, nature, traditions and community walks, talks, swims, local language classes, birds, flora & fauna, traditions,  etc. 
  • Introduction to the ancient health system of aryuveda which uses nutrition, plant based medicine, yoga and relaxation with walks by local experts, consultation with aryuveda doctor who will recommend foods and exercise to benefit you individually 
  • Opportunities to receive training from Alan & Cathy in teaching spoken English and to spend some time teaching in local schools or projects via the Schoolhouse agreement with the Sri Lankan Ministry for Education
  • Optional residential pre-departure preparation included at Schoolhouse

Itinerary 

Day 1 - in Colombo

After transfer from Colombo Airport, you’ll spend your first night in a lesser known colonial hotel gem in Colombo.A light supper, a chance to meet and mingle, take a stroll on the famous Galle Face Green, followed by a good nights sleep will be your introduction to Sri Lanka.

Days 2 -20 in a South Sri Lankan bungalow

After a leisurely start the next day, the group will travel by train on the beautiful coastal railway line to the south of the island to take up residence in the bungalow base. Luggage transfer by trusted van.

You’ll stay in a comfortable room in a beautiful private bungalow where Alan and Cathy are you hosts, providing healthy meals with the help of a talented Sri Lankan cook.

From this base you’ll follow a simple, relaxing daily routine with plenty of time for relaxing, reading, painting, writing …,

take local excursions to beaches, markets, temples, the world heritage site of Galle Fort, and farther afield to see the many wonders and prolific diversity of this gem of an island - the pearl of the Indian ocean, where nature abounds, sparking seas meet golden palm fringed beaches and mist covered mountains carry sacred footprints, healing plants and terraces of tea

find out the history, hear the stories of Sri Lanka’s colonial past - and see the surviving local colourful culture, fire walking, ceremonies and festivals

For those interested in teaching English (or introducing a hobby or leading a cultural session), in local schools or projects, training in teaching spoken English can be provided by Alan & Cathy and teaching sessions can be arranged under the Schoolhouse MOU.

Transfer by private coach to airport for flight home OR flight to Madurai
